Generating Innovation with Japan: Edmonton 2019, an Event Summary

You want to start a business. You have an idea.

The idea is the easy part. Actualizing is where things get tricky. Tricky isn’t going to stop you. You are like an entrepreneurial Dr. Frankenstein carefully piecing your company together. One part concept, one part product development, one part sales plan; zap it with market research, inject some of your own sweat and blood, stitch on some branding for good measure.

Alone in your lab, relying only on your own efforts, your idea probably won’t have much life. Or not for very long. Maybe you make some slow lumbering steps, maybe you just scare the townsfolk. Only sixty per cent of new businesses in Canada survive longer than five years. Here at Enterprise Edmonton we hate that number. It's too low. Good news: we are here to help ensure that you, at least, succeed.

How? Whether it is taking the first step or the next step, our team is here to guide and support you and your business at every key growth stage. At Enterprise Edmonton, we work with our divisional partners, including Innovate Edmonton, to supply programs, workspace, and events through Startup Edmonton and the Advanced Technology Centre. Enterprise Edmonton is here to provide advice, practical guidance, market intelligence, and more through a variety of opportunities, including the Trade Accelerator Program. As a governmental non-profit, we provide this baseline of assistance so that you can connect with who and what you need to grow stronger, so that our city succeeds, faster.

Sorry—you meant how how. Like, give me a “for instance” how. Ok.

For instance: earlier this year on March 6, 2019 our team at Enterprise Edmonton partnered with Startup Edmonton and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to organize (with support from the Trade Commissioner Service, the Government of Alberta, Edmonton Global, and Futurpreneur Canada) an event called Generating Innovation with Japan: Edmonton 2019.

Acting as an in-market reference and partner, Enterprise Edmonton was able to assist with the logistics of the event and the travel for a featured group of visiting investors from Japanese firms, organize a tour highlighting Edmonton’s renowned tech and innovation industry, and provide introductions to the startup community here in our city.

The event, specifically, gave local companies the opportunity to simplify and kickstart the startup process. Through a reverse pitch process, the Japanese firms were able to present their specific problems, and then over 70 local companies were able to meet and pitch their businesses as solutions.

Gaining the experience of that effort while making potentially invaluable contacts from a tech-hungry, growing market was a fantastic opportunity for the involved startups and a crucial step taken towards realizing their goals.

Attending an event like Generating Innovation With Japan: Edmonton 2019, growing your network, making meaningful connections, establishing your presence in a global market—any of these steps, big or small, can be difference makers for companies committed to growth. And companies that are actively committed to growth are the ones that will survive. We are here to make that happen.

You’re an entrepreneur and you have an idea. You want it to live a long life. It will be hard. So, let us help. Check back frequently to see our upcoming events calendar here, and our available services and programs that you can take advantage of here.
