Certification and Registration Requirements
Certain occupations, such as professions (i.e. nurses and lawyers) or the trades (i.e. electricians and welders) in Alberta require certification or registration to demonstrate that you have the required knowledge and skills to perform the work.
This involves either registering with a professional regulatory organization or, in the trades, with Apprenticeship and Industry Training. What you need to be approved for work in your field varies according to each occupation. You will need your qualifications assessed if you have received your training outside of Alberta, and in some cases, an examination (for example, in English proficiency) is required.
Alberta Learning Information Service provides information about certification and registration requirements for regulated occupations in Alberta.
Work Requirements provides information about regulated occupations in Canada and a searchable database. It covers eligibility to work requirements in detail.
