SPORTS

Edmonton has developed a well-deserved reputation as the City of Champions. In the sporting realm this encompasses:

  • Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL)
  • Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL)

Other Edmonton sport franchises include the Edmonton Rush (National Lacrosse League); the Edmonton Oil Kings, a junior hockey team in the Western Hockey League; and the Edmonton Capitals (Golden Baseball League).

Edmonton also has a rich history in successfully hosting world-class events such as the World Triathlon Championships, the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Soccer Championship Canada Cup, the 2005 Tim Hortons Brier (Curling) and the 2005 World Masters Games. The Ford World Men’s Curling Championships called Edmonton home in 2007 when the city also hosted the FIFA Under 20 World Cup Canada.

The Canadian Finals Rodeo also calls Edmonton home. It’s Canada’s biggest money rodeo and the season-ending championship competition of Canadian professional rodeo. Held annually in mid-November at Rexall Place, it’s the largest annual indoor sporting event in Western Canada. The rodeo is held concurrently with Farmfair International and various other citywide western activities.

Golfers will also find Edmonton of championship calibre. There are more than 70 courses in the region and during summer, with up to 17 hours of daylight, golfers can enjoy extended hours on the links. In 2007, Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club played host to the LPGA CN Canadian Women’s Open.

Motor sport is revving its engines with the recent addition of Edmonton to the Indy Racing League circuit. In 2007, the Grand Prix of Edmonton attracted over 167,000 spectators while injecting over $25 million into the Edmonton economy. In its inaugural year in 2005, Edmonton set the record for a Champ Car event in Canada with attendance of 200,052 spectators.

Running Room: In 1984, Edmontonian John Stanton opened the first “Running Room”, a small shop located in the living room of an Edmonton home. Since the opening of his small athletic store offering a variety of running shoes for the avid runner, the word has spread quickly of Stanton’s passion for quality running shoes that met the specific needs of those who required them.

Over the past twenty years more than 90 Running Room locations across North America have opened up exhibiting the same concepts that John Stanton initiated. The Running Room is a store for runners by runners. Having run over 60 marathons, numerous triathlons and competing in world renowned running competitions and continuing to display an active life style;

John Stanton has a running passion to run and an impeccable knowledge of the needs associated with running. In 2004 John Stanton reported the opening of the first “Walking Room” for those who choose this healthy alternative, and lead active lifestyles in walking. With literally tons of room to run on scenic trails and parkland, it’s no wonder “Running Room” started here in Edmonton.

West Edmonton Mall

"For something entirely different, a trek to Edmonton is definitely in order. The West Edmonton Mall, known as the largest indoor mall in the world, is an over-the-top experience that draws more visitors to Alberta than any other attraction in the province. The surreal shopping, eating, and entertainment arena is shoulder-to-shoulder with customers during the winter chill. Not only is it an architectural marvel with its domed curved glass ceiling, the larger-than-life complex boasts its own waterpark, amusement park, bungee tower, daily sea lion show, as well as mall hotel called the Fantasyland Hotel".
