PCL was founded in 1906 by Ernest Poole in Stoughton, Saskatchewan. In 1932, the company moved its corporate headquarters to Edmonton, Alberta. It is the largest general contracting organization in Canada and the sixth largest in the United States.
PCL is involved with more than 700 projects at any one time. These range in value from $20,000 to more than $1 billion and include office towers, residential condominiums, retail outlets, hotels and resorts, educational and health care facilities, casinos, sport and entertainment complexes, bridges, airports, high-tech facilities, water treatment facilities, petrochemical/power/oil and gas plants, and major plant maintenance shutdowns.
It is regularly honored with management awards and was recognized in October 2012 as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. The organization is also recognized for its green and sustainable construction, and works with multiple charities including United Way, Habitat for Humanity and the Red Cross.

They have decades upon decades of experience in planning, estimating, project management, accounting, engineering and procurement, and are deeply involved in industry-related associations. - Ross Grieve, PCL’s chairman of the board, began his PCL career in 1969. Ross’s recent awards include Consumers' Choice 2004 Businessman of the Year, University of Alberta 2005 Canadian Business Leader of the Year, Alberta Venture Magazine 2006 Alberta’s Business Person of the Year, Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories 2007 Business Hall of Fame Inductee, University of Regina 2008 Business Leadership Award, and Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year™ for 2009
- Paul Douglas is PCL’s president and CEO, responsible for all operations within PCL. former CEO and chairman of the Toronto-Dominion Bank is chairman of the AIMCo board. He has led teams in Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Ottawa, and Toronto, and has been involved in the securement and execution of landmark projects. He also serves on the board of trustees of the University Hospital Foundation in Edmonton, Alberta, the Alberta School of Business Advisory Council, the President’s Think Tank for the University of Alberta, and the Canadian council of Chief Executives.
- Gord Maron, PCL executive vice president, has more than 40 years’ experience with PCL, and provides transition support to the areas of strategic planning, enterprise risk management, and succession. Gord serves on the board of directors for the United Way Capital Region. He was awarded the Fellow of CMA Canada designation in 2003. In 2011, Gord was named Canada’s CFO of the Year by Financial Executives International Canada (FEI Canada), PwC, and Robert Half.
