Life in Edmonton
A great place to live and play
For generations , opportunity has brought people from many places and cultures to Edmonton. They stayed because it’s a wonderful place to live. Here are a few of the best things about living in Edmonton:
- Affordable homes: The cost of owning a home as a share of household income is lower in Edmonton than in any of Canada’s six largest cities. (Download .PDF RBC Economics, Housing Trends and Affordability, Nov. 2011)
- Arts & Culture: Get into the happy, improvised groove of one of the city’s festivals. Or dress up for a night out at the theatre, opera, ballet or symphony. Check out the latest exhibit at the ultra-cool Art Gallery of Alberta. Or maybe you are in the mood for a big arena rock shows, late-night club date or live jazz, roots and blues. It all depends on what you want to do tonight.
- Post-secondary education: With 36,000 full-time students, the University of Alberta is perennially ranked as one of Canada’s top research universities. The Northern Alberta Institute for Technology is a leading technical school and MacEwan offers an innovative portfolio of degree and diploma programs.
- Primary education: We’re proud of our public schools, too: Alberta’s 15-year-olds ranked second in reading and fourth in science worldwide. You’ll find the courses and programs that will help you become what you want to be, all right here.
- Health care: All Edmontonians enjoy free, provincially funded health care at doctor’s offices, clinics and hospitals. Our city is home to one of Canada’s leading teaching hospitals, and a world leader in research into diabetes, viruses, heart transplants and rehabilitation.
- Neighbourhoods: Great neighbourhoods make great cities. Edmontonians are building innovative new neighbourhoods while also reinvesting in its older districts.
- Leisure activities: All work and no play — you don’t need to worry about that happening here. Edmonton has fabulous shopping, dining, nightlife and community activities. Have some fun!
- Parks & recreation: It’s easy to stay in shape at the many recreation centres in the city. Or you can run, bike, walk or ski the 150-kilometre River Valley trail system.
- Sports: We’re a bit crazy about sports here. The Edmonton Eskimos have won 13 Grey Cups, while the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers are five-time Stanley Cup champs. This year everybody is talking about the talented, young hockey team and new arena proposed to open in 2015.
